        Wanja Munaita

MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding (2014)

Wanja’s Royal Roads experience began in Kenya, long before she ever set foot on mpus. As her parents' oldest child, she was working to support her family while also saving to pursue a Master of Arts in Human Security and Peacebuilding at Royal Roads. Despite her best efforts, she was struggling to save enough to cover her tuition. She needed help or her dream was at risk of drifting away.

After repeatedly applying for awards and bursaries, her hard work finally paid off. She received a Royal Roads student award that not only enabled her to start her studies, but gave her the opportunity to apply everything she learned in a field placement in Uganda. Wanja’s classwork gave her the foundation she needed in humanitarian assistance, but her research term gave her an understanding of the realities of life in a conflict zone that no classroom could ever provide.

In Uganda, Wanja’s eyes and heart were opened by the tireless efforts of women working to help their communities return to normalcy. As she worked alongside them, she saw the importance of being directly engaged with each community to deliver relevant advice and immediate support in an environment that is constantly shifting. Wanja’s student award changed her life, and as she continues to work towards resolving conflicts around the world, it will continue to change lives for years to come.

        E.J. Tremblay

Graduate Certifite in Executive Coaching (2014), MA in Interdisciplinary Studies (2020)

For the first half of his life, E.J. lived for the arts. After spending two dedes climbing the ranks of the film industry, he was working as a director when he was diagnosed with genetic optic neuropathy—an incurable, untreatable condition that left him with a large blindspot in the central region of his vision.

Without his vision, E.J. was forced to leave the industry he loved. Creativity had always been the driving force of his life, and without it, he felt completely lost. When he heard about the executive coaching program at Royal Roads, he made a natural connection between coaching and directing. It was clear to him that this was his new path forward, but without a job, there was no way he could afford it.

With the help of a scholarship and a student award, E.J. was able to enroll in the executive coaching program, adapt to assistive learning tools, and begin his journey on the long road to reinvention. The support he received from Royal Roads gave him the confidence to change his perspective on learning and, most importantly, on himself. Today, he continues to use his story and experience at Royal Roads to inspire others on their own path to success.

        Paula Lewis

        MA in Tourism Management (2018)

Growing up in Grenada, Paula experienced the positive and negative impacts of the tourism industry first-hand. Through her work with community-based tourism organizations and as a student in the tourism management program at Royal Roads, she saw the power of the tourism industry to change lives and communities for the better. But she knew it had to be properly managed.

During her final year at Royal Roads, she found the perfect opportunity to gain the hands-on management experience she would need to make a difference in communities like hers: an internship at the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) in Washington, DC. But unfortunately, it wasn’t that simple. The internship was unpaid, which would leave her shouldering six months of living expenses all on her own. She needed help, or she would be forced to pass up the opportunity of a lifetime.

Thanks to her student award, Paula was able to focus on her internship at CREST and pursue her dream of creating more sustainable and socially responsible tourism programs for communities all over the world. But her student award didn’t just mean financial freedom, it meant that someone believed her dream was worth investing in. It inspired her to work harder, to think bigger and, most importantly, to always pay it forward.

“Going back to school as an adult is challenging to begin with and adding financial pressure to it brings a whole new layer of struggle. I’ve been there, and I’m sure many of you have too. In 2018, I wanted to help make a difference in the life of a student, like myself, who started with shaky finances. I hoped that by making an initial two-year commitment to the foundation, I could make a difference in the life of a student in need. And having been one, I know every cent counts. A dollar, in time, births dreams. Together, we n make a difference. Give today.”
